Evaluating a Martech Vendor: Before You Sign
Marketing Ops · Cyber Elite Team
Ask to see the platform working with data that looks like yours
A sales demo is built around a clean, curated data set designed to showcase the platform’s best features. Asking a vendor to walk through a scenario using data volume, complexity, and edge cases similar to the actual business, duplicate contacts, messy historical data, unusual product catalogs, reveals far more about real-world performance than the standard pitch.
Understand the true cost curve, not just the entry price
Martech pricing often scales with contact count, email sends, or user seats in ways that are not obvious from the initial quoted price, and a platform that looks affordable at current volume can become significantly more expensive as a business grows. Asking for pricing at two or three plausible future volume tiers avoids an unpleasant surprise a year in.
Check what happens to data and campaigns if the relationship ends
Data export limitations, proprietary automation logic that does not transfer to another platform, and lock-in around integrations are all worth understanding before signing, not after deciding to leave. A vendor confident in their product should be able to answer this directly without evasiveness.
Talk to a current customer of similar size, not just read the case studies
Published case studies are selected to showcase success. A short call with a current customer operating at a similar scale and complexity, arranged directly through the vendor or found independently, tends to surface real implementation friction and support quality that marketing materials do not mention.
Our team has been on both sides of enough of these evaluations to help ask the right questions.
