Seasonal Marketing Planning: Building Around Demand

Marketing Ops · Cyber Elite Team

Most businesses have at least some seasonal pattern to their demand, even if it’s not as obvious as a holiday retailer’s. Planning marketing activity around when demand actually peaks, rather than spreading effort evenly across the year, is a straightforward way to get more out of the same overall budget.

Start from actual historical demand data, not assumptions

It’s easy to assume a business’s seasonality based on general industry patterns, but actual historical sales, search interest, or website traffic data often reveals a somewhat different pattern than the assumed one, sometimes with secondary peaks that aren’t obvious without looking at the numbers directly.

Pre-peak lead time needs to be built into the calendar, not just the peak itself

Content, ad creative, and campaign infrastructure need lead time to build and test before a demand peak arrives, and planning that starts right as the peak begins is usually too late to capture the full opportunity. Working backward from the peak date to figure out when preparation actually needs to start is a more reliable planning approach than planning forward from the current date.

Budget should shift meaningfully toward peak periods, not stay flat

A flat, evenly distributed budget across the year underspends during high-intent peak periods and overspends during genuinely slower periods when the same spend produces a weaker return. Shifting a meaningful share of annual budget toward known peak windows, while maintaining a baseline presence in slower periods, tends to produce a better overall return than an even split.

Off-peak periods still need a plan, not silence

Going fully quiet during slower periods can erode brand presence and search visibility right before it’s needed again for the next peak. A lighter-touch off-peak plan, focused on brand-building content and audience-building rather than aggressive promotion, keeps momentum without matching peak-period spend. Our piece on why content calendars fail covers a related planning discipline that applies here too. Our content team builds seasonal calendars around actual demand data rather than a generic content-of-the-week cadence.
