Notability is about independent coverage, not importance
Wikipedia’s core notability standard asks whether a subject has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject itself, not whether the subject is important, successful, or well known within its own industry. A business can be genuinely significant and still fail notability if the only coverage available is self-published, from its own website, or built on interviews where the company is simply quoting itself.
Press releases and paid coverage do not count as independent sources
Sources have to be both reliable, meaning they have a real editorial process rather than being user-generated or self-published, and independent, meaning they were not written by, funded by, or based on interviews entirely controlled by the subject. Press releases, sponsored articles, and directory listings are routinely rejected during review because they fail the independence test, even when they appear on a well-known outlet’s website.
Companies and organizations face a stricter version of the guideline
Wikipedia applies a more specific standard to companies and organizations than to general topics, requiring coverage that discusses the company in real depth rather than in passing. It explicitly excludes routine business coverage, funding announcements, product launches, and local business directory profiles, unless that coverage includes substantial independent analysis beyond the basic facts.
A properly disclosed, well-sourced draft still is not a guarantee
Even a draft built entirely on strong sources goes through community review, and volunteer editors make the final call, not the person or agency submitting it. The most a well-prepared submission can do is remove every avoidable reason for rejection, which is why upfront source research matters more than the writing itself.
