Link Building: What Actually Still Works
Marketing Ops · Cyber Elite Team
Volume-based tactics stopped working, and staying on them is a liability
Directory submissions, mass guest post networks, and paid link farms were never subtle, and successive algorithm updates have specifically targeted the patterns these tactics produce. A site still relying on volume-based link acquisition is not just wasting budget, it is holding risk that can surface later as a manual action or a sudden ranking drop with no obvious single cause.
Digital PR earns links outreach alone cannot
A genuinely original piece of research, a useful data set, or informed commentary on something currently in the news gets picked up by publications because it is useful to them, not because it was pitched persistently. This kind of coverage tends to produce links from sites with real authority and real relevance, the exact combination volume tactics could never reliably reproduce.
Internal linking is the free link building most sites ignore
Teams spend most of their link building effort looking outward and almost none looking at their own site. Every page that already ranks reasonably well is a source of authority that can be passed to newer or weaker pages through a deliberate internal link, at zero acquisition cost and zero risk. It is the most underused lever in most link building strategies, largely because it does not feel like “real” link building, even though the ranking effect is measurable. It is also one of the first things we check in a
link building engagement.
Cleaning up old, toxic links matters as much as building new ones
Sites that have been live for years often carry a long tail of low-quality links from directories, old paid placements, or link exchanges nobody remembers agreeing to. These rarely cause an obvious problem on their own, but they can quietly suppress how much a domain benefits from the good links it has since earned. A periodic backlink audit, with a disavow file used sparingly and only where warranted, keeps the link profile clean.
