Technical SEO Checklist: 12 Fixes That Actually Move Rankings

Crawlability and indexing come first, always

None of the rest matters if search engines can’t reach or index your pages. Check your robots.txt isn’t accidentally blocking sections of the site, confirm your XML sitemap only lists canonical, indexable URLs, and audit for orphaned pages with no internal links pointing to them. Then check for duplicate or conflicting canonical tags — a common issue on sites that have gone through a CMS migration or URL restructure.

Page speed and Core Web Vitals, in the order that matters most

Start with what’s actually render-blocking: unminified CSS/JS loaded in the head, web fonts without proper preloading, and unoptimized hero images above the fold. Compress and serve images in modern formats (WebP/AVIF), enable gzip or brotli compression, and audit for render-blocking third-party scripts (chat widgets, tracking pixels) that can be deferred or lazy-loaded without breaking functionality.

On-page fundamentals that get skipped on scaled sites

Every page needs a unique title tag and meta description — duplicated defaults across dozens of pages is one of the most common issues on sites that grew fast. Check heading structure follows a logical single-H1 hierarchy rather than headings chosen for font size, and audit image alt text for genuinely descriptive copy rather than blank or keyword-stuffed attributes.

Structured data that search engines can actually use

Schema markup won’t guarantee a rich result, but the wrong or missing schema removes the option entirely. At minimum, validate Organization/LocalBusiness schema on your core pages, Article schema on blog content, and BreadcrumbList schema on deep page hierarchies — then check them in Google’s Rich Results Test rather than assuming a plugin implemented them correctly.

Fix What's Actually Losing You Rankings First

Most sites have more issues than time to fix them. A real audit tells you which of these are actively costing you visibility right now versus which are lower-priority hygiene — that ordering is the difference between a fast win and months of unfocused work.
